Vetting Candidates by the Constitution, Criterion 4: Restoring Balance of Power

Why must civil government maintain a balance of power?

A republic can only experience success if there exists Balance of Power within the government. As Madison points out in Federalist 10, the greatest threat to liberty is our own human nature. The influence of our human nature guided by our opinion remains the constant source of faction intent upon depriving others within our own community of their Creator endowed rights.

AMONG the numerous advantages promised by a well constructed Union, none deserves to be more accurately developed than its tendency to break and control the violence of faction. The friend of popular governments never finds himself so much alarmed for their character and fate, as when he contemplates their propensity to this dangerous vice. He will not fail, therefore, to set a due value on any plan which, without violating the principles to which he is attached, provides a proper cure for it. The instability, injustice, and confusion introduced into the public councils, have, in truth, been the mortal diseases under which popular governments have everywhere perished; as they continue to be the favorite and fruitful topics from which the adversaries to liberty derive their most specious declamations.

A republic is established when balance of power empowers a resistance to the constant encroachment of tyranny of democracy. The oppression of democracy advances either through the will of the majority or the threat by democratic faction groups’ of bad behavior meant to force the subjection of even a majority.

The republican form of government requires reliance upon the rule of law as stated in enumerated powers and authority given to the position created by The Constitution.  Unconstitutional tyrannies are to be inhibited as the occur by the firm defense of the rightful power and authority of every position created by The Constitution through the usurpation of that position’s rightful power and authority.

Federalist 51 – The Structure of the Government Must Furnish the Proper Checks and Balances Between the Different Departments [either Hamilton or Madison] explains the necessity and method to maintaining balance of power. The privileges of balance of power do not exist because we have 3 different branches of government. As Federalist 10 asserts, human nature is perfectly capable of creating collusion between the individuals serving in each of those branches to align not only against each other but to align in unconstitutional tyranny against the very people, the citizens of the nation who formed the very government by ratification of The Constitution.

Balance of Power Includes YOU!

As citizens, we too are a part of the Constitution. We too have specified and enumerated powers that are a vital part of the balance of powers in this government we formed to secure our Creator endowed rights.

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

THEREFORE: Vetting Candidates According to the Criterion: Balance of Power MUST INCLUDE YOU!

All candidates must be able to:

  • Explain the rightful power and authority of the position,
  • Provide you with examples of how they will protect that rightful power and authority from the overreach of other government departments or individuals.
  • As well as provide you with examples of how they will use that rightful power and authority to defend YOUR life, liberty and property from the tyranny of The State, the government – be it city, county, state, or Federal.

We can stop unconstitutional lawlessness by applying the principles of The Constitution to properly vet candidates.
