I want to update everyone on the huge success the Bryan/College Station Tea Party has experienced in alerting our community to the facts of our local debt. At our January meeting, Cindy Mallette of Americans for Prosperity gave us a lesson on how to research local debt. Since then, we have been busy doing our homework and you can read about our progress by browsing through the articles here at the Bryan/College Station Tea Party website (Local Issues articles, Debt/Spending articles).
Attend meetings and share in the fun!
Our March meeting was an exciting session of presentation of the facts of local debt and in designing a flyer for distribution throughout the community (PDF). The artwork and graphic layout is beyond fantastic! Thanks to Brad and Pam for their talent in this effort. Another member, Barry, came up with the idea of the Texas flag draining red ink, which Brad, through his artistic talent, incorporated into the flyer. Stir in a little pun from Pam and you get “Texas Is Bleeding To Debt and You are Paying For It!”
The good folks at Accuprint printed 200 copies of the flyers just in time for the First Friday in Downtown Bryan and a group of us (Brad, Pam, Clyde, Bill, Jody, MaryAnn, Mark and I) passed out practically all our flyers by 9:00 p.m. Mary Ann won the hand-out contest by, with a smile, urging passers-by to “Take one, it’s free!”
What to do now
If you weren’t able to be there, or didn’t hear about it (the decision to do this happened just a few hours before the event!), you can still help us by continuing to spread the word:
- Share the PDF of the Local Debt Brochure with your friends and family, your Facebook, everyone!
- Contribute money so we can print more flyers. Even with a great discount the cost of printing 200 full-color, font-and-back flyers was $78.00. If you want to contribute to this cause please contact me or our Treasurer Jody Quimby.
- Volunteer to help with distribution
- Be a business owner willing to have copies of these flyers at your front counters and reception desks. We also want to heartily thank Paul Reiger, owner of the String and Horn Shop, for letting us set up outside his store last night!
Update: Texas total debt number in the flyer updated 03-18-11 to reflect the 2012 projection
