Socially Liberal, Fiscally Conservative = LIBERAL

Sorry Arnold, it seemed like a good idea at the time...

Sorry Arnold, we could have told you it was a trap...

Author Mark Steyn has a great way of explaining why the problems that we have exist, and what can be done to fix them. Here’s a sample, from National Review Online:

…the reality is that almost every “socially liberal, fiscally conservative” politician turns out to be fiscally liberal — in the same way that, if you mix half a pint of vanilla ice cream with half a pint of horse manure, it’s not hard to figure which taste will predominate.

Easy to understand! And what should be done to fix it? How about stop mixing in any manure at all…would that work? ;-)

Democrat plans produce "results." Another great Michael Ramirez cartoon from

  1. Christopher Jagge says:

There is a big difference between a liberal Republican (Arnold) and a libertarian, but both might be described as fiscally conservative and socially liberal. The issue? Arnold IS NOT fiscally conservative!

  2. So, conservatives cannot support gay marriage, or identify as pro-choice, or take positions on any number of social issues that may be to the left of conservatives without being labeled a liberal?

    • Wondering why says:

It looks like the post is saying that when *politicians* take the stand of being socially liberal and fiscally conservative, the former ends up overriding the latter.

    • Teddy,

“Join, or Die. Again.” means just that – we have a far greater enemy that must be defeated if we are to remain the nation our Founding Fathers envisioned. One only has to look at what happens to those that think differently or live alternative lifestyles in tyrannical states to remember the importance that we remain steadfast in our resolve to defeat the common enemy of the overbearing power of the State. We want to preserve life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The problem of Arnold is the using of taxpayer money wastefully and the power of government to make sure the squandering of the people’s money shall not be infringed. This turns The Constitution and the Will of The People upside down.
True individuals will never agree on everything – that is an impossible dream. However, what we can do is keep our eye on the real enemy – an overbearing, oppressive government that has accumulated power for individual Congressmen, their personal friends and family, the individual bureaucrats operating behind the scenes, and inside lobby-ists. All these people comprise the enemy of our individual liberty.
Only when the LORD Jesus comes again, will individuals be able to speak with one voice and be unified. Until then, we, and I mean me, will fumble around trying to do the right thing but will continue to make errors and say or do stupid things that will cause others unintentional harm. For all these things, I ask forgiveness- for yesterday, for today, and most certainly for tomorrow.
I have written on my blog and at about how we must send the Democrat Party the way of the Federalist Party before them to the ash heap of history. They have proven themselves unworthy as protectors of The Constitution. When that occurs, then I see the Republican Party dividing to make a strong Libertarian Party and which ever will vote to get out of my life the quickest gets my vote.
However, it is vital that remain united until our first enemy is defeated, much as the colonies had to get beyond the slave issue – as heinous as that was to those entrapped by it – in order to defeat the first enemy, the British Crown. While it may sound pragmatic to those on both sides of these cultural issues to do so, it is the only way. We either Join, or Die. Again. or we all live as citizens indentured to our government and a future in which our children are slaves.

True liberty will allow our hearts to change toward one another so we do not see people as groups, but as individuals standing alone by our own merit.

      Most sincerely,
      Nancy Coppock

  3. FYI – Gary Johnson is an exception to this. He proved to be fiscally conservative in New Mexico as Governor for 8 years, leaving the state with a billion dollar surplus, and vetoed 750 bills. Why is he now running as libertarian? Because the social conservatives froze him out of the GOP. Mark my words – Romney and Ryan will not turn this country around. We will be falling off the financial cliff. Too bad – the GOP had it’s chance to nominate Johnson who would have saved their butts. So when your money and your home is worth even less than it is now in a few years (or less), thank a social conservative!
